2009 Chapter Board Nominee Bios

Christian Miller, CFM

Director, Property Management
YMCA of Greater New York

Christian Miller has been in the facility management field for over 25 years. In his current role he provides guidance and support in Operations, Maintenance, Security, Housekeeping, Pest control, Capital Investment, Green Initiatives and Code compliance to 13 YMCA locations in New York City totaling almost 1 million square feet. Prior to this role Chris was responsible of leading the team which relocated the historic McBurney YMCA to it’s new modern facility on West 14th Street this was the first new YMCA constructed in Manhattan in over 70 Years.

Chris has been Vice President and Chairperson of the Professional Credentials Committee with IFMA GNY, leading introductory sessions and monthly study groups. He earned his CFM designation in 1995 and also holds facility management certifications from BOMA and NYU.

Chris attended Wagner College on Staten Island where he earned a BS and MBA. He is involved in several professional and community support organizations as a volunteer.

His personal interests include World Travel, the Arts and, Physical Fitness.

Steve La Valley

Senior Account Executive
InterfaceFlor in NYC

Steve is the Senior Account Executive with InterfaceFlor in NYC and has been affliated with Interface for 21 years. His passion in business is creating sustainable manufacturing models and advising Corporations on how to achieve their environmental goals.

Steve has been involved with IFMA for over 15years and currently serves as one of four vice presidents on the Board of Directors. He presently serves as Chair of the Associates Committe which organizes such events as our golf outing and boat cruise.

Steve has also served as Assistant Secretary and Treasurer and was co-founder of IFMAGNY's Membership Retention Committee.

Ellen Hains

New Business Development
Architectural Flooring Resource

Ellen Hains has been a service provider to the Facility Management arena for over 20 years and has been an active member of IFMAGNY since 2002. As the previous Chair of the Awards Committee, Ellen oversaw 3 awards banquets at the Grand Hyatt and created the Nominees Cocktail Party as an added event for the chapter’s distinguished members.

Ellen is currently serving as the Chapter’s Secretary. In addition, she is the Board liaison to the Awards Committee and Member Service’s Committee.

Ellen currently works New Business Development for Architectural Flooring Resource in NYC and in her spare time loves to travel.

Brian Ostrowe

Management Consultant

Brian Ostrowe is a management consultant who provides business operations, process improvement, real estate and facilities expertise to his clients. He is the former head of global Corporate Services for BlackRock, a premier provider of global investment management, risk management and advisory services to institutional and retail clients around the world.

Prior to joining BlackRock, Brian was the head of support services for the American Red Cross in Greater New York. In that capacity he was responsible for the organization’s real estate, facilities management, fleet services, emergency communications, and security services. Brian is a former Intelligence Analyst with the Federal Government and was the head of Investigative Support Services for the NYPD Intelligence Division.

Ostrowe has been published in the Facilities Management Journal and the Journal of Police Science and Administration. He is the former editor of The Facilitator, an International Facilities Management Association of Greater New York monthly publication. He has served on a number of the national International Facilities Management Association’s senior-most committees and Task Forces including those on key educational initiatives and programs. He has also served on the local chapter level as Treasurer, Vice President and President of the Greater New York Chapter. He currently serves on the chapter’s Executive Board and Strategic Planning Committee, and is chair of the chapter’s Website Committee. He created and chaired the chapter’s inaugural Sustainability Committee and is a member of the US Green Building Council, serving on it Programs Committee.

Brian has also been awarded the Facility Manager of the Year, Facility Project of the Year and as President, his chapter was awarded the International Facility Management Association’s Chapter of the Year Award. During his tenure as President of the Chapter he increased programs delivered to facilities professionals by 120%, increased membership by 30% and chapter revenues by 200%.

Brian received his BA, Summa Cum Laude, from Fordham University. He was also awarded Special Honors in Social Science and is a lifetime member of Psi-Chi, the National Honor Society in Psychology.

Frank Lazzaro

Vice President Real Estate and Facilities
NBC Universal

Frank has been Vice President of Real Estate and Facilities for NBC Universal for over 30 years and has played a critical role in expanding NBC Universal's Real Estate and Facilities activities and has enhanced these units strong reputation for quality and integrity. Frank is responsible for Corporate Real Estate Operations and Technical Architecture & Engineering "worldwide;" in addition to Facilities Operations & Engineering and Business Services for "500” locations globally, which equates to over "9 million" square feet.

Frank's accomplishments include securing sites and constructing the facilities for the Olympics, NBC Television Stations, Universal Studios, TODAY Show, CNBC, MSNBC, Bravo, Telemundo, SCI-FI and USA Network.

Laura Gimpel

Facility Manager
Google – Northeast US Offices

Laura has been with Google since 2001, when the Google New York office was only 17 people. Since then her responsibilities have grown right along with Google. She now manages the facilities teams in the New York City (now 1700 employees), Pittsburgh PA, Washington D.C., Cambridge MA, and Reston VA.

She holds a Bachelor’s Degree from New York University in Performance Art and can speak English in 7 different accents. She is an accomplished swing dancer and is heavily involved in her local church (Big Apple Chapel).

In 2007 Laura was awarded The Distinguished Professional Member Award by the New York Chapter of IFMA and is very active on their membership committee.

Colleen Moran

Director of Operations Services
Newsweek

Colleen been with Newsweek since August 2007. She is a graduate of Florida State University and a seasoned professional with over 15 years of experience in Corporate Services.

Colleen began her career at a staffing firm, enhancing the worksite of many organizations including Tech Data Corporation and Goldman, Sachs & Co. After being hired by Goldman, Sachs & Co., Colleen progressed from her position as an Associate to Vice President of Corporate Services. While at Goldman, she was responsible for providing all the services in the America’s Regional offices as well as the programming and build out of numerous domestic and international offices, including Seattle, Palo Alto, and Sao Paulo. Colleen was also an integral part of the crisis management team during the aftermath of 9/11.

At Newsweek Magazine has just completed the relocation of Newsweek’s NY office. Colleen lead the project team in programming, design, and construction of the new downtown space. In addition to the move she is responsible for the day-to-day operations of Security, Facilities, Delivery Services, Switchboard, and Dining Services.

Colleen is an active member in the International Facilities Management Association regularly participating in events and seminars. Recently, Colleen hosted an IFMA event at Top of the Week, Newsweek’s executive dining and conference center. She is also is on the board of her condominium association and a class parent.
